Teacher's Tools : Introduction
Get started in your classroom today!
BlueCross WalkingWorks for Schools was created to teach children in grades K-5 the benefits of proper exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle and to curb the growing trend of childhood obesity. Participants are asked to walk at least five minutes each school day for a period of 12 weeks each semester.
Teachers play an integral role in the success of BlueCross WalkingWorks for Schools. You are the on-the-ground leaders in taking steps for Tennessee's youth.
What's required?
The requirements are simple - walk at least five minutes each school day for 12 weeks each semester.
Each school should assign one coordinator for the program. Coordinators are another key to making BlueCross WalkingWorks for Schools a success for your school. Coordinators register the school for participation every year and receive all the program materials, updates and reminders to share with teachers.
Why is participation important for your students? Consider the facts.
- Childhood obesity in Tennessee is climbing at alarming levels – an estimated 19 to 30 percent of Tennessee school students are overweight.
- By increasing students’ activity level, teachers can positively impact their students’ health and performance in the classroom.
- Research shows that physical activity performed at school may help enhance learning readiness, increase concentration and reduce disruptive behaviors.
What incentives does the program offer?
Each student gets a "WalkingWorks" wristband to wear during the program. Teachers can download student achievement certificates for those who complete the program. Classrooms that reach participation goals can earn pedometers for each student. Schools that reach participation goals are honored as "Extra Mile Schools" and earn a banner to recognize their efforts. The school's name is also added to the "Honor Roll" on this Web site.
