One step is approximately 1 ½ feet, so 3,500 steps is about one mile. 17,500 steps is approximately five miles.
Here are some creative ways to use your pedometer:
- Rotate the pedometer among your class roster every day, so that each student gets a turn. You might assign the pedometer to your classroom’s “Student of the Day.” Have the student report the pedometer’s step count to the class immediately after walking.
- Keep a separate log of your classroom’s daily steps, in addition to your minutes-walked log on your tracking poster. Have your class work on math exercises to convert steps to miles (2,000 steps = 1 mile), or add together all the steps the class walks in a week.
- Have a different student wear the pedometer each day, all day, and report to the class at the end of the school day on how many steps he or she took that day. Be sure to point out to your students how the step-count increases when you are able to walk more than the program minimum of five minutes a day.
- Motivate your class by setting a weekly average classroom goal for steps or minutes to walk, and using your pedometer, see how long it takes to reach 10,000 steps (5 miles) by thinking creatively about adding steps during the day.
